Details on the Scion Exchange and Grafting ClassTo the right are varieties of apple scions that will be available at the 2018 scion exchange.
Date: March 24 Time: 11 am to 3 pm Location: Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, 14319 E. Eighth Avenue, Spokane Valley Pricing: one stick is $2 , 3 sticks for $5, 7 for $10, and after 7 the additional sticks are only $1 each (Proceeds will be split between INW Food Network and host church) Rootstock and Supplies The rootstock for sale will include Geneva 222 (semi-dwarf, $4.00), Bud 118 (semi-dwarf, $3), and Antonovka (standard, $3). Other grafting supplies (rubber bands, aluminum tags, and grafting wax/seal) will also be available for purchase. Grafting Class A grafting class will be offered by Jim McGinity from 11 am to 1 pm, the same day as the scion exchange, March 24th, at the same location (address above) in the Spokane Valley. The price is only $30 and includes two rootstocks. If participants in the class are not bringing their own scion wood, then they are encouraged to arrive early to buy scion wood at the exchange to use with the supplied rootstocks. Check out the alternatives below: For those of you up north Jim McGinty is also teaching a grafting class at the SCC Colville Center on March 15th from 6-8 pm (also in Iron, Newport, and Republic on those dates by ITV). Contact SCC concerning enrolling in one of these grafting classes. Jim McGinty will also be offering a grafting class in Whitman Country on March 17th, from 11 am to 1 pm. The location is the Gladish Community Center (Room 211) in Pullman, located on 115 NE State Street. To register for the Pullman class, call David Benscoter at (509)238-5150. As of March 12th this class is almost full so get in your registration while there is still room. Sorry to inform you that this class is full. Bob Purvis, a WSU-trained orchardist and nurseryman from Homedale, Idaho, will be returning to our area to offer duplicate 5-hour grafting workshops on April 13 and April 14 in Spangle, WA. This workshop covers the bench grafting techniques of whip and tongue grafting and chip budding and the top working techniques of bark grafting and cleft grafting. Apple List from David Benscoter (Lost Apple Project) David Benscoter is delighted to have scions available from recently discovered lost varieties that are part of the Whitman country Lost Apple Project. These heirloom varieties include the Nero, the Arkansas Beauty, Fall Jeneting, and the Dickenson. Also included are scions of the rare Palouse heirloom apple. It is possible to buy grafted trees of these varieties from the Whitman County Historical Society on M111 rootstock. Other scion lists will be added as contributors are lined up for the exchange.
